To the Editor:Re “Christopher Durang, 75, Master Playwright With Impish Wit, Dies” (obituary, April 4):I was so saddened to hear of Chris Durang’s passing. Chris was a wonderful, kind, hilarious man. In college I was in a musical he wrote about the life of Jesus. But mostly, Chris was a delightful man with a big heart and brilliant wit. CNN —It was over before it really began in Saudi Arabia as Anthony Joshua pummeled his way past Francis Ngannou with a devastating knockout blow in the second round. Richard Pelham/Getty ImagesFrom the opening bell, Joshua looked to assert himself on the sport’s newcomer. “I should be the WBC heavyweight champion of the world,” a defiant Joshua told reporters after the fight. He did what Tyson Fury couldn’t do,” Ngannou told reporters. “Everyone knows he knocks out Tyson Fury, I’ve always believed it now it’s not even questionable,” Hearn told Sky Sports after the fight.

LeBron James joined yet another exclusive club, and he’ll have plenty of familiar faces alongside him at the NBA All-Star Game. James is an All-Star — and an All-Star starter — for the 20th time, with the league unveiling the results of this season’s starter balloting on Thursday night. Durant is a 14-time selection now, one of only 11 players in NBA history to be picked that many times. Tatum set an All-Star Game record last season, scoring 55 points in Salt Lake City on the way to MVP honors. This year’s All-Star Game goes back to the traditional East-vs.-West format, which was utilized in the first 66 NBA midseason classics.

What weight tells us about our health
  + stars: | 2024-01-17 | by ( Dr. Sanjay Gupta | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +12 min
(CNN) — If you’ve been paying attention to health news recently, you may have noticed a subtle but real shift in the way society discusses body weight. Beyond health care dollarsDespite changing attitudes about larger bodies, excess weight does carry a price. From a health care standpoint, it costs the country a lot of money. According to a study published in the journal The Lancet in 2020, 27% of total health care expenditures in 2016 — about $730.4 billion — could be attributed to “modifiable risk factors” for preventable health conditions like cardiovascular disease. That was eight years ago, when our total health care expenditure was $2.7 trillion, according to the study.

I’m trying to remember the last time the Republican winner went on to win the nomination: Ted Cruz in 2016? Gail Collins: And remember, Trump won Iowa in 2020, when he was an incumbent president looking for a second term; that didn’t turn out all that well for him, either. Bret: Not that I’m rooting for him to win in Iowa. He said he never worked on the annual financial statements at the heart of New York Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit. James alleges Donald Trump, his company and executives including Eric and Donald Jr. exaggerated his wealth by billions of dollars on financial statements given to banks, insurers and others. On Monday, Trump Jr. will be questioned first by the defense lawyers representing him, his father and other defendants. When he became president in 2017, Donald Trump handed day-to-day management of his company to Eric and Donald Trump Jr. and named Trump Jr. as a trustee of a trust he established to hold his assets while in office. “I had an obligation to listen to the people with intimate knowledge of those things,” Trump Jr. testified.

Review and Outlook: In the third Republican presidential debate on Nov. 8, 2023, Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis, Chris Christie, Tim Scott and Vivek Ramaswamy revealed the emerging GOP fault line on foreign policy. Images: Getty Images/Reuters Composite: Mark KellyDonald Trump, Joe Biden and the Beltway press corps all agree on at least one thing: Mr. Trump has the 2024 Republican presidential nomination wrapped up. Yet no one has voted, the Iowa caucus is 47 days away, and now the contest to be the GOP’s non-Trump alternative is getting interesting. Nikki Haley on Tuesday won the support of Americans for Prosperity Action, which is part of the Koch network. In an endorsement memo, the group said Ms. Haley is ready to tackle inflation, simplify the tax code, and cut government spending, adding that she “has the courage to advocate for reforms to an entitlement system that makes promises it can’t keep.”

It’s easy to forget how much we used to rely on real, physical paper and, like, other people to buy basic things. It wasn’t all that long ago that you’d call a travel agent to book a flight. But the sellers argued that in a competitive market, the buyers should pay their own agent’s commission, and negotiate that fee separately. Because even though the NAR says fees are negotiable, the industry has made 5%-6% commissions so standard that most people wouldn’t question it. According to Bloomberg, Realtor commissions are high by global standards.

New York CNN —Sam Bankman-Fried’s fate is now officially in the hands of a jury of his peers. Chief among those errors, according to his own testimony, was was not hiring a dedicated risk management team. “I made a number of small mistakes and a number of larger mistakes,” Bankman-Fried said on the stand last week. Although Bankman-Fried made mistakes, he never defrauded anyone, Cohen told jurors. “Poor risk management is not a crime.”Bankman-Fried’s parents, Barbara Fried and Joseph Bankman, were both in the courtroom again Thursday.

New York CNN —FTX founder and former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried has made a career out of risky bets that, for a while, paid off. Typically, defense attorneys advise their clients not to testify because it leaves them vulnerable to grilling by the prosecution. But at this point, Bankman-Fried doesn’t have much of a choice, legal experts say. Before his world came undone last year, Bankman-Fried was a rising star, even outside the insular world of crypto. It nonetheless helped to propel his star power and secure a $32 billion valuation for FTX.

And that’s why he wasn’t around in the final minutes, as Canada clinched a trip to the Basketball World Cup semifinals. “It's an honor,” Gilgeous-Alexander said after Canada's first World Cup semifinal berth was clinched. Boris Johnson, Out of Parliament, Is a Columnist Again

But it was conspicuously absent from The Daily Mail, the biggest and most influential British tabloid. That is — until one looked above the headline about Mr. Johnson’s latest woes to a curiously familiar silhouette of a figure with a generous head of hair. Next to it was a headline that said, “Starting tomorrow: Our erudite new columnist, who’ll be required reading in Westminster — and across the world!”A spokesman for The Mail, Sean Walsh, confirmed that the mysterious new writer was Mr. Johnson, the former prime minister. His first weekly column was due to be posted on The Mail’s website on Friday around 5 p.m. local time (noon Eastern), Mr. Walsh said, and would appear as a full page in print on Saturday. “But Here We Are” has a back-to-basics immediacy and intensity that was missing from the last few Foo Fighters albums. (As a companion piece, they also released a cheeky collection of Bee Gees covers.) The undercurrent holding all of “But Here We Are” together is not an idea so much as raw emotion. Grohl’s melodies are as soaring and anthemic as they’ve sounded in years; his vocals are freshly impassioned and heartfelt. The towering title track layers intricate guitar work atop skittering percussion before a chorus comes along and sweeps everything into a tidal wave of sound.

Cannes 2023: The Films We’ve Excited About Seeing

Wes Anderson’s films have premiered at a wide variety of festivals, but after “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012), “The French Dispatch” (2021) and his upcoming ensemble comedy “Asteroid City,” Cannes is the fest he keeps coming back to. Last week, I asked Anderson what he finds so compelling about a debut on the Croisette. “The reason to go to Cannes, I think, is because they said yes,” he deadpanned. “After that, there isn’t really much to contemplate.”Well, there’s a little more to it than that, Anderson admitted: For cinema lovers, there is no holier pilgrimage to make than to the Cannes Film Festival, where movies are treated with the utmost reverence and routinely given marathon standing ovations. It is a place where great auteurs have been canonized, like Martin Scorsese, who won the Palme d’Or in 1976 for “Taxi Driver” and will return this year with his new feature “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and Quentin Tarantino, a Palme winner (for “Pulp Fiction” in 1994) and Cannes habitué who’ll be back at the fest this year for a wide-ranging conversation that may touch on his upcoming final film.
Why Do Cats Hold Such Mythic Power in Japan?

Now the sun was fading, and Mihoko and I went to a coffeehouse to discuss the lack of cats. (Later, I also thought that the cats’ relative scarcity made them more precious; at one number, they were curiosities. Or maybe, even, it was possible to believe that the cats knew something we didn’t. Although Tokyo, with its 14 million residents, remains one of the largest cities in the world, other parts of Japan are emptying of humans. But although the humans hadn’t been able to replace themselves after a certain point, the cats had had no such problems.

By now, we should be used to HBO’s series pulling the rug out from beneath our expectations. Still, as more than one pundit observed of Logan’s death, this one shocked more than merely surprised. Not me, though I do miss Brian Cox already because few actors anywhere are as adroit at playing dyspeptic sociopaths. It would be at the very least ironic if “Greg the Egg,” the minion’s minion, stumbled into power as if he tripped on a sidewalk. I’ll say no more on this except to suggest that you all try to remember who in the end won that “Game of Thrones.” It’s not inevitable.
The tech giant's moves into women's health coincides with a funding winter for startups in the sector. Insider spoke to VCs about the challenges and opportunities this creates for women's health startups. When Apple rolled out the Apple Watch Series 8 in September this year, it cemented its growing footprint in the global women's health market. The aim is to give consumers a more consolidated view of their health data, an Apple representative said — but it's a step that could spell trouble for women's health startups. Funding into women's health has taken a dipThe tech giant's gradual monopoly over health data comes at a time when its apparent competitors — consumer women's health startups — are feeling the tech downturn.
